The Slot in Hockey

Slot

A slot, in computer terms, is a place to add a card with circuitry that provides additional capability. Most desktop computers have several expansion slots, such as an ISA, PCI, or AGP slot.

The slot is one of the most important positions in hockey because it allows a defenseman to rip a blistering slap shot that will often be enough to slip the puck by the goalie. However, in many cases the defenseman must be at the high slot to get a good angle on the shot and avoid deflections.

Psychologists have found that people who play video slot machines reach a debilitating level of involvement with gambling three times more rapidly than those who play traditional casino games, even if they have previously engaged in other forms of gambling without problem. In addition, the 2011 60 Minutes report “Slot Machines: The Big Gamble” highlighted the link between slots and gambling addiction.

Slot receivers are smaller, quicker wide receivers who line up closer to the middle of the formation than traditional wide receivers who line up on the perimeter. This creates mismatches with linebackers who may not be fast enough to keep up with them in open space, especially if they are running quick routes like slants and quick outs. This can be advantageous for the offense, as they can create big plays with a single player by forcing the defense to adjust its coverage. However, it can also be detrimental if the quarterback doesn’t execute the play well.
